This was exhaustive in detail as to what Bob Hope did entertainment-wise, but I never got the sense of what he was like off stage. I don't know what made him happy or sad, whether or not he felt fulfilled or empty, what motivated him, if he really loved his wife or if it was a convenient arrangement, if he cared for his children, if the women he had long-term affairs with mattered to him. The book is really a lot of facts of what he did professionally.That said, I don't know if that's the author's fault. It seems Bob Hope was very guarded, very private, so I'm torn between giving this a 3 or 4 star review. I'll go with 3 because I was frustrated reading the book. I wanted to know what Bob Hope was like and I can only guess.I think it's great what he did for the servicemen, but I also think they were the greatest audience he ever had and he ate that up. I think it gave a sense of power and meaning to his life, but I'm just guessing. He seemed so driven. Only rarely are you given a glimpse as to how he really felt emotionally--like an angry comment he made about Bing Crosby not having he and his wife over for dinner. Then again, he cried when Bing died. Who was Bob Hope? A great entertainer. After reading the book, that's mostly all I know.
